A house full of history
Due to its strategic location, Cartagena de Indias became a coveted place to be plundered by pirates or invaded by conquerors from other regions. For this reason the Spanish crown decided to fortify and wall the city to protect and defend it. For which they brought African slaves who left the best of their work to build the various fortifications that would surround the city, attending to the military considerations of the time.
Cartagena was invaded many times, left in ruins, but they never managed to settle. It became the capital of the new Kingdom of Granada (today Colombia). This city was always the most desired treasure for everyone, that’s why the kings of Spain insisted on keeping it under their rule because of its great value.
After the period of conquest, colonization, inquisition and evangelization, which occurred all over America, the first attempts at independence from the Spanish crown began in the early nineteenth century. Cartagena de Indias was the cradle of this movement and on November 11, 1811 the act of absolute independence from Spain was signed, for which 10 years passed to achieve definitive emancipation.
The house where Lunalá Hotel Boutique is located is part of the group of urban buildings that make up La Calle Larga, located in the neighborhood of Getsemaní in the historic center of Cartagena de Indias. Place where the emancipation movement that gave freedom to the city was born.
